Sun N Fun Lakeland, Pilots Spring Break
The second week of April is the dreaded tax deadline we do not look forward to, however every year there is an event in Lakeland FL that attracts about 300,000 pilots and aviation enthusiasts around the world. That's something to really look forward to.
The Sun-N-Fun event, not to be confused with the campgrounds of the same name, has been considered the pilots spring break since 1974. The gathering is the second largest US Aviation event behind the Oshkosh, WI airshow. The Airshow attracts the best of the best and who is who in the aviation industry, from Hollywood celebrities all the way down to first time pilots.
This event has something for everyone, with a kids zone, shopping areas, food, hundreds of airplanes, and much more. A must see is the air show they put on at night. The airplanes shoot fireworks and pyrotechnics off of the wings, coordinated to music, and it is spectacular.
There is a reason that this is a six day event as it is so much more than a show. There are 2200 acres full of static airplane displays, activities, seminars, vendors, and yes, camping. It's not unusual see a pilot flying in and pitching a tent next to their airplane for the week. As a matter fact there is a section dedicated to it. I have seen everything from a make-shift tent using the airplane wings to multiple people tents. The grounds are very accommodating offering full bathrooms and showers for comfort.
Inside the airport facilities there are several RV campground areas. The main RV area is primitive camping and can be reserved ahead of time, but the spots are first come first serve.
Even that is primitive, water, showers, camp store, porta-potties and dump stations are available. There are also generator restrictions so If you decide to come out make sure you follow their rules. The camping fees also include admission to the event for the entire week.
In the last few years, the airshow partnered up with Lazy Days of Tampa and they now offer New Class A and Class C rentals. Rentals also have convenience packages available that includes all the linens and towels, kitchenware and much more. All the fees includes the campsite and admission to the show.
We usually stay about 15 miles away at the Lazy Days campgrounds, that way we not only have full hookups but we can get away from the crowds after a long day. The commute and traffic are not too bad. There are many other campgrounds in the area to choose from, just depending how far you want to stay.
The Sun-N-Fun airshow is a fun escape and definitely worth attending for the weekend or all week long. This is a unique event that the whole family can enjoy. For more information or to reserve your spot visit www.flysnf.org/rv-tent-camping.
Until our next blog, Happy camping!
